Class 2 Curriculum
English
To complete our work on Astro Girl, we will be researching space facts and then turning this information into our own fact files. We will then move on to reading the wonderful ‘Stella and the Seagull’ by Georgina Stevens. Through reading the story, children follow the friendship between Stella and her seagull, exploring the determined actions of Stella and her grandmother to make a difference in their community. As we read, we will respond to the text with a range of written tasks including lists, speech bubbles, posters and instructions.
Maths
We have begun our unit on addition and looking at part-whole models and using these to create number sentences. We will continue with this and then move on to subtraction, again, using part-whole models and ten frames to support our learning. We will then move on to learning about shape.
Science
Last term we learned all about materials and their properties. This term our focus will be on applying this knowledge to create investigations about materials using skills of observation, comparison and classifying. In addition, we will observe the changes in rainfall, temperature and wind as winter arrives.
Computing
Our next computing unit is all about Digital Painting. Children will develop their understanding of a range of tools used for digital painting. They we will use these tools to create our own digital paintings, while gaining inspiration from a range of artists’ work. The unit concludes with the children considering their preferences when painting with and without the use of digital devices.
Theme
Our theme learning is continuing with a focus on the UK. We are learning about the 4 countries, their capital cities and characteristics. We will continue to build our 3D map of the UK after learning about the physical and human features of UK such as prominent rivers, mountain ranges and cities.
PE
Our indoor ‘Beyond the Physical’ PE unit is ‘Throw, Prepare and Catch’ which will help children to master the foundations of throwing and catching skills. Our outdoor sessions will be from the unit ‘Hands, Feet, Equipment’ in which children will learn to control equipment such as balls using their feet whilst on the move.
PSHE
PSHE lessons will focus valuing differences. We will consider the ways in which we can be different and how we can both celebrate and show tolerance of differences.
RE
In RE lessons we will continue to learn about Christianity by understanding what a Christian is and what they believe.
Art and DT
In Art, we will create 3D clay fish and use a range of clay tools to manipulate the clay for different textures and effects.
In DT we will make puppets inspired by the traditional seaside culture in relation to our UK theme. The puppets will mechanically move up and down through the use of a rod.
Music
In music lessons we will be learning a range of nativity and Christmas related songs. We will accompany the songs with a variety of percussion instruments as we explore rhythm.
