MENTAL HEALTH AND Well-Being at highfield
Looking after our Mental Health:
Mental health is all about the wellbeing of the mind. It’s all just a little bit of word play. As you know we all have mental health, and this isn’t a bad thing! It’s about how you maintain it.
At Highfield, we believe that the wellbeing of our children’s hearts and minds are just as important as their physical wellbeing. When children don’t feel well in their body, we tend to know immediately what could help, whether that’s giving our children rest, medication, or taking them to see a doctor. We try to think about our children’s minds in a similar way. That is, when they are show signs of difficulty or distress, to think with parents, families and other professionals about ways to help them.
It is our responsibility to work towards achieving what is best for each child and this means making sure that we support and nurture each pupil to be ready to learn and work towards achieving their potential, in whatever way is best for them as an individual.
"A Child's mental health is just as important as their physical health and deserves the same quality of support. No one would feel embarrassed about seeking help for a child if they broke their arm - - and we really should be equally ready to support a child coping with emotional difficulties."
Kate Middleton
The wellbeing of our children and families is a priority at Highfield. Here are some of the ways that we are supporting mental health and wellbeing at Highfield:
Nurture time, key adult check ins, Emotional Literacy Programme, Pupil Support Plan, Social and Communication Groups, Lego therapy, Place2Be therapeutic sessions, Mental Health Practitioner sessions, social stories, personalised timetables, transition activities.
We encourage parents and carers to communicate with us regarding any concerns about their child’s wellbeing or any change in circumstances at home which may affect their well-being / capacity to focus on their learning. |
Mental Health Support Teams
Highfield has been chosen to participate in Phase 1 of the Trafford Thrive in Education Mental Health Support Team Programme.
Following the publication of ‘Transforming children and young people’s mental health: a green paper’ there is a national ambition to enhance the mental health support in schools and colleges. This commitment was re-confirmed in the NHS Long Term Plan published in January 2019. Consequently, national funding has been made available for the development and trials of Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) based in a selection of education settings and therefore help to build upon the support already available to children and young people. The MHSTs are led and supervised by NHS children and young people’s mental health staff and will provide specific extra capacity for early intervention and ongoing support within an education setting.
Trafford Thrive Model
In Trafford the THRIVE model is used to deliver services to young people. This model thinks about the mental health and emotional wellbeing needs of children, young people and families through five different groups, each based on the level of need: Thriving, Getting Advice and Signposting, Getting Help, Getting More Help, and Getting Risk Support (see diagram below).
In Trafford there is a big focus on prevention and promotion of mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Highfield is now a TTT school, please see the information below and contact school if you feel you or your family would benefit from this support.
TTT is a fresh approach to ensuring that our children, young people and families are supported in the right way, as early as possible and help prevent small worries turning into future problems.
TTT is designed to address the needs of any child (and their family) living in Trafford and/or attending a Trafford educational setting.
