Assessment
Assessment is the process of collecting, recording and analysing information about pupil progress towards achievement of the curriculum outcomes.
Children’s progress is closely monitored at Highfield in order to provide the best possible opportunities and highest levels of support for all children. Assessment takes into account children’s strengths as well as areas where they need support. All assessment activities aim to ensure that children are able to make excellent progress in their learning whilst reflecting the needs of individuals.
The aims and objectives of assessment in our school are:
- to enable our children to demonstrate what they know, understand and can do in their work;
- to allow teachers to plan work that accurately reflects the needs of each child;
- to help our children understand what they need to do next to improve their learning;
- to provide regular information for parents which enables them to support their child’s learning;
- to identify strengths and weaknesses of individual pupils, different groups of pupils and cohorts to determine best provision
- to self evaluate and drive school improvement
- to contribute towards accountability data
As of September 2014, the government introduced a new National Curriculum with new expectations. The key changes included:
- higher expectations - the knowledge and skills expected at each stage is more difficult
- a mastery approach - children need to have all of the knowledge and skills in order to meet expectations at the end of a Key Stage.
