Art Curriculum
Intent
Art is a creative form of expression. A society that values being creative, values a sense of self-identity. Art stimulates the mind and can help children understand the world. Art reflects the visual world that we live in. Learning skills and techniques in art and design gives children an additional language to express themselves through, as well as process their thoughts and infer meaning from our visual environment. As well as being a way of expressing ourselves, art is rich in cultural histories and plays an important role in how it both reflects and shapes our history, and contributes to the culture, creativity and the wealth of our nation, helping all children to recognise themselves in our community. Art lessons provide opportunities for children to work in ways that differ from other subject areas, in ways that support the development of well-rounded children through the exposure to a broad and balanced curriculum. A high-quality art and design education engages, inspires, evokes thinking, and sparks questioning. At Highfield, we provide opportunities and challenge all children to design, create, interpret and enjoy art. To critically think, analyse and understand art, to learn and practise skills, to experience an array of art disciplines and movements, and to apply the accumulation of the taught curriculum to begin to apply and create independently for enjoyment and expression.
Implementation
At Highfield we learn art through three strands: theory (Art History), skills based knowledge (technique) and creative application (creative works). Through a diverse and well sequenced schema, the progression of children's skills are developed.
During their time at Highfield Primary School, children have opportunity to:
- produce creative work by exploring ideas and creating experience
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture, as well as other techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works, using the vocabulary associated with art and design
- know about a diverse range of artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms
Impact
Highfield's high quality art education equips the children with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, developing life-long enthusiasm, learning and higher-order thinking within art and culture.
