art enrichment

At Highfield we aim to find ways to enrich our school curriculum through clubs, event days and other opportunities.

Arts Club

UKS2 were invited to join a club to develop some of their STEAM (Science, Technology, Enigineering, Arts and Maths) skills, including ceramics where they applied DT (Design Technology) skills to design a clay ocarina. We discussed music theory and science when they were making the ocarinas because the placement and size of the hole effects the sound that it creates.

Next, the children learned about specific ceramic 'paints' (called glazes) to decorate their ocarainas according to their designs. We talked about the etymology of the word 'glazes' and discussed that they are a glass-based adhesive and that is where the term 'glaze' comes from.

The pictures below show the process. Watch out for pictures of the final products once they are out of the kiln. They will also be going on display in school.

Whitworth Art Galley - Class 1 and 2 Trip

Class 1 and 2 have thoroughly enjoyed their Art learning this year and were extremely excited to visit an art gallery. The children were able to immerse themselves in the art, viewing an array of collections and exhibits and took their Art Journals around with them to draw what inspired them. They also got to meet and work with an artist who intorduced them to L S Lowry. The chidlren got to practise their art skills through shading and creating movement in an image. This linked to their current learning about texture.

'Which Way Now?' Art Project

Ms Plant advised on the Teachers' Toolkit for Sam Curtis' 'Which Way Now' art project in collaboration with The Serpentine Gallery in London.

Check out the project here.

Once the toolkit has been published, we aim to embark on our own version here at Highfield. It links closely with each keystage's unit on 'Our Local Area', which is taught through Geography and History.

Art Week

We celebrated Art Week during the Spring term. Each class was set the task to create a response to the Covid global pandemic. Each child was given a piece of A5  coloured paper and they were tasked with applying a chosen artist or technique taught within the academic year. The coloured paper brought an extra challenge for the children as they had to apply their knowledge of colour and of different media so that the art work would still be visible.

To celebrate the week and to mark the return of the Highfield 8s system, each child's work was exhibited in the hall and grouped by their 8s. The children were then able to visit the exhibition in the 8s to view, discuss and celebrate their work.

A Message From Olafur Eliasson, Artist and Activist

The famous Icelandic-Danish artist, known world-wide for his sculptural and installation work, as well as his children's augmented reality (AR) 'eco' app and artwork, Earth Speakr, sent Class 2 a message!
